Youth Education Program Welcomes 500th Student
This month marks a special milestone for the Erie Canal Foundation’s Youth Education Program: we welcomed our 500th student participant since the program launched in 2023. Fourth-grader Amara from Syracuse’s Seymour Elementary became our 500th student during a field trip to the Erie Canal Museum.
The Youth Education Program brings the history of the Erie Canal to life for students across Central New York through interactive field trips, classroom presentations, and hands-on activities. Students learn about engineering, ecology, geography, and the social history of the canal era.
Growing Impact
Since its inception, the program has partnered with 28 schools across five counties. Teachers consistently report that students are more engaged and enthusiastic about local history after participating. “My students talked about the canal for weeks afterward,” one teacher shared.
The Foundation plans to expand the program to reach 1,000 students annually by 2027, with new curriculum modules on environmental stewardship and the canal’s role in the Underground Railroad.
