Canal Clean Sweep
April 17–19, 2026 | Statewide
The 21st annual Canal Clean Sweep returns! Thousands of volunteers clean up trails, parks, and waterways along the Erie Canalway and New York State’s canals. Organized by Parks & Trails New York in partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation, the event brings communities together to remove litter and debris from trails, greenways, and waterways. Last year, over 1,000 volunteers removed 48,000+ pounds of trash. Hosts can register events and receive supplies (register before April 7). Visit ptny.org to register or volunteer.

2026 Navigation Season Opens

The NYS Canal System opens for the 2026 navigation season. Locks operate 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with extended hours (8 a.m. to 9 p.m.) at select locations from May 16 through September 10. Season runs through mid-October. Visit canals.ny.gov for lock schedules and boating information.
Colonial Belle Canal Cruises Begin

Canalside Buffalo Season Kicks Off
Memorial Day Weekend through Summer | Buffalo, NY
Canalside Buffalo’s 2026 season launches with duck-themed paddleboats, free daily fitness classes (Zumba, yoga, bootcamp, salsa — 15th year!), Sunday Socials on the first Sunday of each month (June 7, July 5, Aug 2), food trucks, live music, and family activities. Replica Seneca Chief Boat Tour

The replica Erie Canal boat Seneca Chief makes its “Back to Buffalo Tour,” retracing the original 1825 inaugural voyage. The Seneca Chief departs Waterford on June 6 and stops in communities along the canal, including Rome (June 11–12). Shop local vendors every Saturday this summer at the Erie Canal Village Marketplace, set within the historic grounds of the site where construction on the Erie Canal began on July 4, 1817. Canalside Children’s Book Festival

Cycle the Erie Canal — Annual Bike Tour
July 11–19, 2026 | Buffalo to Albany
The fully supported 8-day bike tour travels 400+ miles along the Erie Canalway Trail. Cyclists cover 40–60 miles per day through scenic canal towns and countryside. Includes campsites, meals, rest stops, and gear transport. Registration: $1,300 adults / $700 youth (ages 6–17). Arrive in Buffalo on July 11. Register at ptny.org.
Water Music NY Festival — Rome

The Albany Symphony Orchestra brings Water Music NY: More Voices Festival to Rome. Navigation Season Closes

The NYS Canal System closes for the season around mid-October (approximately October 14). The Colonial Belle’s last cruises depart October 30 from Fairport. Plan your final canal outings of the year! Visit canals.ny.gov for official closing dates.

The Sam Patch, a replica historic packet boat, departs daily from Schoen Place in Pittsford, traveling through a century-old lock with live narration about Erie Canal history. Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises

Daily narrated sightseeing cruises past five original 1800s locks. Witness three million gallons of water fill Locks 34 & 35 — the only double set on the Erie Canal — raising the boat 50 feet. “On the Canals” — Free Recreation Program
